Does CSS design help with SEO?

Over time web design has improved, mainly due to the advance in the Internet and new technologies, user demands and expectations. Websites are now designed and developed using CSS/HTML. CSS design has become a web developer’s best friend along with reducing costs for website owners. CSS design is now favoured by all most all web developers over table based design, which is now classed as old practice and not favoured by search engines either, so if a website is still designed in tables it doesn’t rank as well as a CSS/HTML designed site.

If you would like more information about how CSS design can improve your website and its search engine rankings, read -Benefits of CSS/HTML design – tips to improve SEO, accessibility and manageability. The article covers some of the main benefits of CSS, tips to improve your accessibility using CSS, tips for improving your SEO, along with tips for improving the manageability of your website.

Facebook Places

Facebook Places

We’ve had who, what, when and now we have where. Social networking giant Facebook has launched its location lead feature, known as Facebook Places in the UK today, one month after going live the in US.

The new feature is being rolled out gradually and may not be available to all users just yet.

How it works

Facebook Places works by allowing users to check into venues and tag their friends in the same location, and then their friends either accept or deny – much like the photo application.

The idea behind it is that it allows people without smartphones to be included in location based activities without going into all the complex privacy issues that the social network has previously encountered.

With other players in the location based social networking market with the likes of Foursquare, Gowalla’s Passport, etc. Currently you could say that pole position in the location based social networking is still up for grabs. Bearing this in mind, it is easy to see why Facebook has added this feature; there have been rumblings for a good few months that such a feature was around the corner. With the number of Facebook users growing daily, currently over five hundred million active users, it would be an easy estimation that Facebook Places will take the lead in location based social media.

With Facebook Places being a very small part of Facebook very large picture. It is clear that Facebook is now trying to be an all in one service for social networking, much like what Google has done with search. What this space for Facebook next new feature, who knows what they have in store for us next.

Web pages that load fast improve users experience of your site

Having problems with your website load time and losing traffic and sales because of it? There could be many reasons why your page is loading slowly.

For some reasons why your site could be slow loading read Angel SEO’s article - How to improve my site’s speed for Google. The reason your website doesn’t load fast could be very simple, e.g. your images are to big or you have to much content on your page or your page is too long.

Although on the other hand it could be elements that are more complicated and you many need to hire an seo expert (for more information read - Should I hire an SEO expert). If your page loading time is due to your websites structure or styling, it can be fixed by an SEO expert/web developer.

You will be surprised by how much making little changes to your website can affect your websites search engine page ranking; as well as user behaviour on your website. Users behaviour can change by encouraging them to stay on your site longer because they are having a better experience, which in turn makes them more likely to buy or engage with you.

WordPress v HTML/CSS websites - which is better for SEO?

The SEO world is buzzing at the moment over Wordpress v HTML/CSS websites - which is better for SEO?

Angel SEO’s MD Dave Cain, has recently conducted a study, Wordpress v HTML/CSS websites. The study came back with some interesting findings and proved the case for bespoke websites over template based websites. Read Angel SEO’s study here.

During the study two websites were uploaded on their own domains, one a bespoke HTML/CSS site the other a Wordpress maintained site. To begin with both ranked well in Google, ranking on page one. But after only a few days the Wordpress site started to drop down the ranking, whilst the bespoke site remained on page one. It is important to remember neither site was updated during the study.

For a Wordpress maintained site to be ranked well in Google, it needs to be treated like a blog and updated regular, if not on a daily basis. Whereas bespoke sites that are created in an SEO friendly way continue to rank well because they are created in such a way that they keyword rich and answer a searchers enquiry. Which in turn means Google is more likely to index them higher, and keep them there for a longer period of time.

New Myspace, seen that somewhere before!

Is it me or does the new Myspace profile page look rather familiar. Anyone else think that new design looks a lot like Myspaces more popular competitor Facebook?

The new design does seem to concentrate more on the stream (new feed, maybe?) The navigation panel can be found to the left of the stream, like most websites. Therefore conforming to users previous experiences and expectations.

I have to say I do like the new Social Networking panel. It groups together the social networking elements and enables friends to follow the user on other sites. Although Myspace is yet to confirm if this is the finished profile design.

All in all, the new design is a vast improvement on its predecessors. Gone are the days when the comment box was the last item on a profile.

Myspace has made it clear that the new profile page has only been give to a selected number of users at the moment. In order for the social networking site to gain feedback and if needed make changes. Once the testing period is over the new profile will be rolled out across all its users. Current feedback on the new design has be mixed.

It is yet to be seen if the new page set up will turn things around for the social networking site that began the social media phenomenon. It is definitely a big step forward for Myspace. Wonder what changes will be next? A like button maybe? We will be watching closely.

Facebook caves in and launches “panic button”

Social networking site Facebook has given in to months and months of pressure and launched its own panic button.

To start with Facebook wasn’t keen on having a form of “panic button”saying it highlighted and made something out of a problem that wasn’t currently an issue for their site.

Several months of negotiation between Facebook and CEOP (The Governments law enforcement agency given role of tracking down online sex offenders) has resulted in the social networking site publishing its own form of panic button application today. Facebook has managed to avoid the “panic button” since November when CEOP called for social networking sites to install an online safety feature with the likes of MySpace doing so. Facebook has the largest number of users with 400 million active accounts and is the last social networking site to introduce this from of safety feature.

Facebook is targeting its users aged between 13-18 years with the new “panic button” application. The site is hoping that youngsters install the application off their own backs or are encouraged to do so by a parent or guardian.

The new application comes as reassurance for parents and young users alike. Although the number one social networking site will promote its “panic button”, which in reality is a link to CEOP’s online advice and reporting page. Facebook has clearly stated that the “panic button” is not a default application and has to be added by the user.

Time will tell if the “panic button” does help keep younger Facebook users safer, many industry insiders say it will not make a difference due to how online sex offenders operate, they do not operate like traditional sex offenders, instead they chose to go down the relationship building route, meaning the youngster in question is even less likely to report them.
